Skin Growths

Skin growths are considered to be a lump of cells that grow on the skin and often are slightly different in color than the regular skin. Most skin growths will have a darker color than regular skin and will sometimes turn black but others will be the color of regular skin. Some of these growths are considered to be birth marks that are present at birth and some of them will develop later in life.

Malignant and Benign Skin Growths

There are two types of skin growths: benign, which is non-cancerous, and malignant, which is cancerous. The basic difference is determined by the growth, meaning that a benign growth will stop growing at a certain point but the malignant growths will continue to grow until they are removed. A malignant growth will continue to grow in size to the point it will begin to be painful. Malignant growths can also spread to other parts of the body and invade normal tissue. While benign growths are harmless and will only be a nuisance, malignant growths can be dangerous and, if left untreated, may become life threatening.

Types of Benign Skin Growths

There have been a number of benign skin growths that have been recognized by dermatologists. The majority of them do not cause any symptoms and are basically harmless. There are some that will cause some irritation and pain but this is usually determined by their location. The majority of benign skin growths include dermatotfibromas, dermoid cysts, freckles, keloids, keratoacanthomas, lipomas, moles, pyogenic granulomas, seborrheic keratoses, and skin tags. The majority of them can be removed by surgery, injections, or special creams. If they are considered a risk for growing into something more serious, removal is highly recommended. Anyone who has a skin growth that changes colors is recommended to see a dermatologist or physician immediately since this might indicate a more serious condition. This is also true for growths that become irritated or painful.

Benign Moles and Melanoma

Moles are one type of skin growth that should be carefully watched. Some of them will change colors and grow into cancerous growths that are called melanoma. This is usually more prevalent in the larger moles and the ones that are present at birth. Anyone who has one of the moles, and they see a change, should immediately consult a physician. This is especially true if the mole has a border that appears irregular or if the mole appears to look different on one side. If you are in any doubt about a mole it is best to consult your doctor as soon as possible.
