Skin Tag Causes

It is estimated that about every other person alive has at least one skin tag on their body. Still there is no answer about what causes the tags. Probably the reason that skin tag causes have not been studied more in-depth is because of their benign nature. Even with their benign nature there are some studies that have been performed on their potential causes. Here we will take a brief look at the main causes.

Heredity

One of the causes of skin tags is the possibility that they are hereditary. Often genetics seem to play a role in skin tag development. These tags usually appear around middle age but it is possible for people of any age to develop them. Some have even been noted on babies. Babies who have two parents with skin tags seem to be at a higher risk of skin tag development.

Obesity

Many studies also indicate that obesity plays a role in the development of skin tags. People who are overweight tend to be a greater risk for skin tag development than those who are slim and have a normal weight. Obese people tend to develop skin tags in their armpits, groins, neck, and on their eyelids. It has not yet been determined why obesity carries a higher risk for skin tag development. It is a general idea that the skin tags are the result of skin rubbing against skin. In women, these tags will often appear under the breasts.

Pregnancy

Skin tags develop in both men and women but pregnant women are more susceptible than women who are not pregnant. Pregnant women tend to develop skin tags under their breast, under their arms, and on their neck. The one good thing about skin tags that appear during pregnancy is the fact that they usually go away after birth. If they are annoying before birth they can be safely removed with cryothearpy in a physician’s office.

Miscellaneous Skin Tag Causes

In addition to the causes that are mentioned above, there are other factors that have been known to influence skin tag growth. The most notable is the friction that is present when skin rubs against skin or when skin rubs against clothing. Also, elevated levels of hormones like those that are present in pregnancy or gigantism are also considered to be a cause of skin tag growth. The body’s resistance to insulin is another possible factor as is HPV (human papillomavirus).
