Skin tags are simply benign growths of excess skin but may people prefer to have them removed because of the way they make them look. They make the affected area appear rough and ugly but there are also other reasons that people want to have them removed. Often they will get irritated and cause the individual discomfort and sometimes they will even become painful if they constantly rub against other skin or clothing. Having skin tags removed greatly improves the look of the skin and prevents the possibility of irritation or pain. There are several ways to cure skin tags and it is up to the individual how they prefer to cure them. Some treatments are more costly and painful than others so the choice comes down to individual preference. Here we will look at some of the more common skin tag cures.
Ligation
Ligation is a method that can either be used in a physician’s office or it can be used in the home. It is done by tying either thread or dental floss at the base of the skin tag to the point it cuts off the blood supply to the tag. The tag will then dry up and die and will usually be gone within a couple of weeks. If preferred, the tags can be snipped off with a sharp pair of scissors or nail clippers. If this is done at home you should make sure that the cutting instrument is well cleaned and sanitized to prevent the possibility of infection. Many people do not like this method because of its invasive nature.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy, or cryosurgery, is another method of removing the skin tags but this should be done in a physician’s office. The physician freezes the skin tags by using a cold substance such as liquid nitrogen. This procedure is relatively simple and does not cause a lot of pain. The skin around the area is left untouched and the area becomes smooth once the tag area has completely healed. For those who cannot tolerate much pain this procedure can be done with a local anesthetic. This procedure is also not preferred by people who do not want invasive treatment.
Herbal Ointments
There are herbal ointments that are available that are used for skin tag removal. They are popular because they are used in the comforts of home and do not require the services of a physician. Most health stores carry SkinSave and DermaTend but if you are pregnant or nursing it is not recommended that you use them.
Home Remedies
There are also home remedies available for skin tag removal. This type of treatment will usually take longer but they are painless and simple and do not require the services of a physician. A mixture of caster oil with baking powder is very effective as well as tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar. |
