What is a Skin Tag?

Many people have questions about what a skin tag is. It is a concern of millions of people since about half of the population has them. Skin tags usually appear during adulthood and even though they are benign, they mar the appearance of the body where they are located. They are commonly found on the neck, in the armpits, near the eyelids, under the breasts, and in the groin areas. They usually start out small and will grow slowly over time. Dermatologists usually describe skin tags as being benign skin growths. They are also described as being soft flaps of skin that are the same color as the skin surrounding them, or possible even a little darker.

Who Gets Skin Tags?

All people are susceptible to getting skin tags. About half of the population will experience them at some point in their lives. They are usually not present at birth but will develop later in the adult life. Most appear in people who are around middle age but they have been known to appear in infants too. Toddlers also have been known to develop skin tags as well as pregnant women. Pregnancy causes elevated hormones that may cause skin tag development but as soon as the pregnancy ends, so does the skin tags.

Health Risks of Skin Tags

People who get skin tags naturally wonder if they are a sign of any type of health problem or if they could develop into something more serious. Fortunately skin tags are benign tags of skin that do not indicate any type of health problem at all. There is the possibility that they can become irritated and painful if they rub against other skin or pieces of clothing. Getting snagged by items of jewelry can also cause irritation

Removing Skin Tags

Many people prefer to get their skin tags removed even though they do not pose any type of threat to their health. The reason most people prefer to have them removed is for cosmetic reasons. Once removed the skin returns to its smooth and healthy state. There are a number of ways to remove skin tags such as freezing, burning, and cutting them off. If you do not want to pay a visit to your physician there are also home remedies that will do the trick but they will take a little longer.
